Red Wine by 2 Brothers from Chile, South America. Two Brothers Winery, a partnership between brothers Erik and Alex Bartholomaus, released their debut wine, Big Tattoo Red 2001, in autumn of 2002 as a way to raise funds for cancer research and Hospice care in memory of their mother, Liliana S. Bartholomaus. Alex Bartholomaus, President and C.E.O. of Billington Imports in Springfield, Va, blended Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Syrah (40%) and Merlot (10%) to create this unique product. Alex then teamed up with his brother Erik, an established world-traveling tattoo artist, to design a fun label that would remind the two of their mother. Erik designed the label and they named their creation Big Tattoo Red. Fifty cents from every bottle sold is donated to the Hospice of Arlington, Va, and other breast cancer research foundations in the name of Liliana S. Bartholomaus. The two sold 13,835 cases of the 2001 debut vintage and raised $83,010 to donate to Cancer research and support. The 2002 vintage was released in June, and the brothers are on track to sell an additional 40,000 cases and donate another $240,000 by the end of next May. It was the Bartholomaus brothers' goal to honor their mother, who lost her battle against cancer three years ago. They wanted to do this in a non-serious yet beneficial way. This fun wine boasts a label with a Fleur de Lys, Liliana's favorite symbol, and its red and black label stands out on any retailer's shelf. This Chilean red is a ripe, easy-drinking wine with smooth flavors that compliment many foods, or can be enjoyed alone. The first release was a big success, but the popularity of this wine soared during 2003, popping up on wine shop shelves and restaurant wine lists nation wide.

Based on one bottle, I would not rate it as highly as the 1996 or 1990, but it is much better than the 1998, and appears to have more body and richness than the 1995, also a top-notch vintage. The 1999 should have at least 20 years of life ahead of it.

The red berry and black cherry flavors really pop on the palate as the wine has both good depth and very lively acidity that leads to an incredibly long finish. Red Wine by Dom. Drouhin Oregon from Willamette Valley, Oregon. Ve ronique's Tasting Notes: The 2004 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is quintessential Pinot to me: beautiful, soft, feminine, and obviously pleasurable. The color is classic ruby red, and the wine has the medium body I look for. On the nose, the '04 is all cherries and crushed berries. On the palate, the wine is luscious and concentrated, leading to a long finish. I wouldn't hesitate to drink the wine now, but I would be very happy to save several bottles to enjoy over the next 10+ years.

Another break-out hit for the recidivist partisans of this eclectic pan-Mediterranean blend. The varietal mix was altered just a tad this year and introduced a substantial amount of cabernet franc into the concoction. Big House Red is all about fragrance, spice and soft tannins. It has a fragrance of mint and garrigue, with insinuations of blackberry and the ubiquitous framboise. Not a wine that you would want to serve to the Queen (in virtue of its unregenerate rusticity), it is nevertheless a wine that is the perfect complement to barbecue, pasta, pizza and all of the major non-vegan groups. .It's really good, and proves that Randall Grahm continues to march to his own beat. -Wine Enthusiast

Vina Maquis Lien is a blend of Syrah, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec grapes, resulting in a disinctive wine that reflects the special plot of land the Hurtado Vicuna family owns in the Colchagua Valley in Chile. The vineyards and winery are located at the confluence of two historic rivers, the Chimbarongo and the Tinguiririca, which brought down from the Andes sediments that established teh vineyard's alluvial soils, and channel cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean, contributing to the richness and fruitiness of the wines. Ricardo Rivadeneira Hurtado and his team pride themselves in creating such a generous red wine full of character and a sense of place. White Wine by Pewsey Vale from Barossa Valley, Australia. Each individual block of grapes was picked at optimum ripeness exhibiting the classic ripe flavors gorgeous natural acid freshness evident in the Pewsey Vale Vineyard, Eden Valley. Timing could not have been more perfect as the rain and cold weather came in early April 2007 when the wines were safely tucked away in tank. The 2007 Pewsey Vale Riesling is a rich and intensely flavored wine, with classic fruit aromas of lemons and limes and a hint of overlaying dried herb. This wine shows great length, finishing with a soft but fresh natural acidity which balances the flavor intensity, and will reward with medium to longterm cellaring. Red Wine by Penfolds from Australia. Color: Dense, dark red. Nose: At once elevated, the nose is separated from the others in the Penfolds Bin family by the overt high notes of its barrel fermentation contribution. This is archetypal Bin 389 with notes of Maraschino marinated dark berries mixed with dark chocolate, bayleaf, black (Kalamata) olives and roasting pan juices. Oak and charcuterie elements effortlessly fill any aromatic gaps. Palate: The 2005 Bin 389 is complete, full and multidimensional from start to finish, its weight coupled with (understated) power, depth and length. Ripe fig, blueberry and dark plum fruit flavors synergise to create an inky/dense palate with no rough edges. The oak, and plush tannins are at one with the wine, elliciting no one dominant feature and a seamless palate. The Silver Oak Cellars 2003 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant, highly expressive wine that displays great complexity due to the multifaceted climatic conditions of the harvest season. The wine is dark ruby with a purple to red edge. It displays bright aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, black tea, allspice and ginger. In the mouth, it has a full-bodied attack, a round, balanced mid-palate redolent of cherry preserves, brown sugar and caramel and an extremely long finish of savory ripe fruit. Properly cellared, it should give drinking pleasure until 2026. Our 2003 Alexander Valley, a blend of wine from several different vineyards, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2004 and transferred the wine to 50% new and 50% once-used American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine's natural elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine is then aged in barrel for approximately 25 months and another 15 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release.

The vintage was outstanding due in part to good winter rainfall and a milder than usual summer with only a few days of extreme temperatures. The result was an excellent, even ripening period. Red Wine by Sineann from Willamette Valley, Oregon. Can't say enough good things about this wine - one of the real thrills of the vintage. We expect Resonance to shine. Phelps Creek is automatic. To have this vineyard step up to that level of quality is very exciting. Located at fairly high elevation in the Hood River Valley, 1600 feet, the grapes are able to retain higher natural acidity. The higher acidity gives the wine brightness in its youth and a better ability to age gracefully. That and great concentration of fruit (from 1.5 ton per acre crop sizing) have produced a delicious wine.
White Wine by Dom. de la Pepiere from Loire, France - regions. The most complex, ageworthy white wine you will ever buy for under $20? Quite possibly. Minerally, complex, high-acid white wine. This wine is something of a legend among wine geeks - try and bottle and you'll see why. Winemaker and grower Marc Ollivier takes his time to make his Muscadet. He hand harvests (a rarity in the region), uses natural yeasts, waits for the wine to finish fermentation, and bottles with a very light filtration. His Muscadet has a bright color; a slightly bubbly, round and supple mouthfeel with sound structure; and a clean and fruity finish. Clos des Briords is Marc's finest Muscadet. It comes from a single plot of 50-year old vines planted in schist (shale). Marc is the only grower in Muscadet who does not have a single clonal selection vine (commonly used toincrease yield) in his vineyards. He propagates vines from the bud wood of the existing ones. His wines are kept on the yeast twice as long as those of his neighbors. The resulting wine is an extraordinary Muscadet. This wine has citrus-lime and wet stone aromas. On the palate it has bracing lemon mineral flavors that keep on going.

Non-Vintage by Laurent-Perrier from Champagne, France - regions. Laurent-Perrier has been producing a Demi-Sec since the 19th century, when it was known as Laurent-Perrier Excellent. Today it is heralded by connoisseurs for its diverse food pairing opportunities. The general movement towards dryer wines along with the custom of drinking Champagne as an aperitif, has generalized the consumption of brut. But many wine-lovers still enjoy the softness and the gentle reminder of past pleasures provided by a Demi-Sec, especially when served with a dessert. More than 55 crus make up the blend. Typically, Laurent-Perrier incorporates 10% to 20% of reserve wines into the blend, though some years this is higher. The second fermentation on its lees lasts at least three years. The dosage used is a liqueur made from sugar and wine from the same batch. Roughly 45 grams of this liqueur per liter are required. Its bright, shining color is a fairly deep golden hue. Its nose is intense, with a range of aromas, such as dried fruit, almonds and hazelnuts, with grilled and toasted hints. After a little aging, these will evolve to even deeper aromas of honey and pine resin. The richness of the Demi-Sec naturally calls for sweet dessert dishes, such as pastries or chocolate, enhancing them with considerable depth.
Red Wine by La Rioja Alta from Rioja, Spain. The 2000 Reserva Vina Ardanza has 25% Garnacha blended with the Tempranillo. Light to medium ruby, it delivers an enticing bouquet of cedar, spice box, leather, forest floor, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a ripe, moderately dense wine with complex flavors and excellent balance. Drink this tasty effort through 2015. Wondering what happened to the original Cristalino Gold Label? Cristalino started 2011 with a facelift and updated its packaging, but don't worry it's still the same great Cava you've always loved.
Non-Vintage by Gosset from Champagne, France - regions. Aromas of pear and honeysuckle perfume the bouquet. This is a beautifully balanced champagne with a long, expressive finish. Gosset only uses juice from the first and best pressing of grapes, and unlike most other producers, initial fermentation is still carried out in small oak barrels. Riddling and disgorgement are performed by hand. Significantly, and in contrast to virtually all other houses, Gosset Champagnes do not undergo a malolactic fermentation, resulting in a heightened acidity, slower maturing wines and that inimitable Gosset style - powerful and full-bodied, of unrivaled richness and staying power - in other words, some of the world's most legendary Champagne.
Red Wine by Salentein from Argentina, South America. The Salentein Malbec was cultivated in vineyards on El Portillo Estate, located at 3,937 feet above sea level on alluvial, stony soils of excellent permeability and low organic matter content. The handling of the canopy is based on a perfect balance of shades and sunlight through clustering and leaves, to preserve the character of a mature wine. Balanced vines supported on bilateral cordon trellis, with a low plant yield, efficient drip irrigation and optimum maturity, leading to the distinctive Salentein style. A bright violet color with shades of ebony, this stunning wine boasts intensity and depth in the glass. Aromas of fresh, ripe plums, cherries and spice are complemented by a hint of tobacco from aging in oak barrels. This complex Malbec offers flavors reminiscent of ripe red berries, with a fine concentration and the sweet tannins typical of the variety. Very fine, fruity (apples, peaches), forward varietal aroma. Pronounced, clean, elegant, grapey flavour, light to medium-bodied with a fresh mouthwatering finish. When properly cellared, this wine may be kept for at least 3 - 5 years. As an aperitif, with starters, salads, asparagus, all kind of seafood and pasta dishes. Vineyards in the Salorno and Buchholz area at 300 to 450 metres (990 - 1,480 feet) altitude. Sandy and stony soil. Aromas of blackberry and cassis fill the glass with nuances of vanilla and cedar. On the palate this wine is deeply flavored with a hefty core of fruit. Vintage by Dom. Carneros from Carneros, California. The 2004 vintage was the earliest harvest in memory. The early spring was followed by nearly ideal ripening conditions and the crop was small, as were 2002 and 2003. The resulting Brut cuvee is one of Dom. Carneros' most fragrant vintages. The 2004 cuvee is composed of 61% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Blanc. Approximately 9% of the cuvee underwent malolactic fermentation prior to blending the cuvee for tirage bottling. The wine has been aged for three years prior to release and will further age gracefully in your cellar (if you can resist opening). This cuvee has wonderful fruit aromas of pears, baked apples and citrus peel enhanced with hints of caramel, spice. The wine is unusually round for its age, very mouth-filling and with a long creamy finish. Lovely served with double or triple cream cheeses, it also matches especially well with fish, shellfish, poultry and most Asian dishes.

Non-Vintage by Santa Margherita from Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. Nestled in the hills of the eastern Veneto is one of the most wonderful wine growing regions - the Valdobbaidene. In April 2010 this small area was established as a DOCG region, the highest quality level that can be given to an Italian wine. Glera (formerly known as Prosecco) grapes are grown on the steep hillsides, 100% hand-harvested, and crafted into the prized Santa Margherita Prosecco DOCG. With peach and apple aromas, this fresh and balanced sparkling wine has fine perlage with a refreshing finish. Prosecco di Valdobbiadene is excellent as an aperitif, ideal with seafood dishes and after meals with light desserts. The color is straw yellow, with an aroma that has a lively vinosity characterized by a fine fruity fragrance and an elegant long-lived mousse. On the palate the wine tastes pleasantly dry with a well-balanced acidity, making the wine fresh and lively.

Parcels of old vines 60-100 years in age, planted in soils of great character and complexity, provide the grapes for this wine. They are picked when fully mature and meticulously sorted by hand to further enhance concentration. These old parcels, in which different varieties are planted together, embody the symphony of 13 varieties, though Grenache predominates. Loaded with rich, dark layers of black currant, blackberry, truffle, tar, mocha and bittersweet cocoa, this pumps out both fruit and terroir on the gripping finish. Immense in scale and depth, this is hard to lay off now, but should be even more impressive when it drops its muscle to show more elegance (that will take a while though). White Wine by Dom. Schlumberger from Alsace, France. Product of a great year, this is a beautiful example of a high quality Riesling that is fruity, dry and robust. It will enhance all simply-prepared dishes and fish, as well as meat. It may easily be cellared three to four years, but is enjoyable now. Riesling, a dry yet lively wine with a racy acidity, is considered the noble grape of the Alsatian varietals. It is very different to its German counterpart and to the numerous Rieslings which are now appearing around the world. The Alsace Riesling is better known for the elegant balance of acidity and fruit. It is a late maturing varietal and continues to mature even at quite low temperatures with wonderful results when the vintage ends with a warm and sunny harvest month.
Red Wine by Goats do Roam from South Africa. The grapes were harvested from vineyards in the Paarl, Perdeberg, Piekenierskloof and Malmesbury regions. The majority of grapes are sourced from dry farmed old bush vines. These vineyards provide low yields, resulting in wine with considerable concentration. This vintage has for the first time incorporated fruit from Stellenbosch, adding ripe, supple tannins to the blend. Colour: Vibrant brick red. Aroma: Ripe red fruit, with a fragrant lift, with liquorice and spice notes. Palate: Fruit follows through, with fragrant notes completing the medium bodied mouthfeel. Well integrated with a smooth finish. Cellaring: The wine is ready for drinking. Enjoy over the next year or two.
